Transitioning Border

The Cambridge Common offers a space for free-form movement in its greenery, set apart from the fast-paced and directed world outside. Premised in two key transitions of movement and vegetation, the design project analyzes and reconfigures ways of occupancy. A border - and yet a portal - stands on opposite sides, inviting occupants to directly enter the green space devoid of preconceived pathways. The borders transition into seating areas conducive to congregation and play, and the space inside presents a taxonomy of benches. Each design element results from the negation of circular forms in a square grid, reflecting the project’s intent of reducing rigidity and introducing variety.
